A putting green order is not simply a landscape turf order with a shorter pile. The playing surface, fringe and transitions serve different purposes. Each needs a clear material specification and a layout that supports the contractor’s installation plan.
We distribute materials only. This guide explains what contractors should separate, verify and document when ordering a putting green package rather than a landscape turf package.
How do putting green materials differ from landscape turf?
Putting green materials should be selected for the intended playing surface, while landscape turf is selected for its landscape use and appearance. Compare pile construction, face weight, backing and installation requirements together. A shorter pile or heavier face weight alone does not establish that a line suits the specified application.
| Specification | Putting surface selection | Landscape or fringe selection | Ordering check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pile height | Typically shorter and more closely cropped | Often taller for a landscape appearance | Confirm the actual specification on the published spec sheet |
| Face weight | Evaluate with yarn construction and intended use | Evaluate with pile construction and landscape requirements | Do not treat heavier as automatically more suitable |
| Backing | Check compatibility with the specified assembly | Check the requirements of the selected landscape line | Verify seaming materials and handling instructions |
| Use case | Specified playing surface | Fringe, approaches or adjacent landscape areas | Identify each area separately on the material schedule |
Use the published spec sheet for each proposed line. Similar color or appearance does not establish equivalent construction. If a substitution is proposed, compare the complete specification and obtain approval before the order is released.
What should a putting green materials order include?
Separate the playing surface, fringe and installation accessories into identifiable quote lines. Confirm which materials the selected turf requires rather than carrying over a landscape installation list. Include project-specific components only when the contractor’s design calls for them, and establish which items are included in the requested material package.
- Playing surface Identify the exact turf line and connect its requested cuts to the approved layout.
- Fringe and approaches Specify these separately from the playing surface, even when the client wants a coordinated appearance.
- Seaming and fastening materials List the materials required by the planned assembly and verify compatibility with the selected backing.
- Infill Confirm whether the selected line requires infill and obtain the applicable material and application instructions.
- Project components Identify cups, flags, edging or other specified components. Ask the rep to confirm availability and inclusion rather than assuming they come with the turf.
Keep base preparation and grading in the contractor’s site plan. Turf selection does not resolve an unfinished grade or an undefined transition. Confirm the planned assembly before finalizing material quantities.
How should contractors plan rolls for the green and fringe?
Prepare separate roll layouts for the playing surface and fringe, using the available width of each selected product. Net area alone does not establish the order quantity. Curves, seam placement, material direction and perimeter trimming affect the cut plan, so confirm the layout before authorizing the written order.
Rolls are 100 ft long and 12, 13 or 15 ft wide depending on the product. Do not assume the playing-surface line and fringe line share a width. Confirm the available width and whether the requested cut configuration can be provided.
- Mark surface boundaries Show the playing surface, fringe and adjacent landscape areas as distinct zones.
- Draw proposed seams Check seam locations against the approved design and the selected line’s installation instructions.
- Track material direction Maintain the intended orientation when planning adjoining pieces and evaluating usable offcuts.
- Identify each cut Give each planned piece a clear identifier on the layout and request matching identification on the order paperwork.
What information changes the quote and freight plan?
The selected lines, quantities, requested roll cuts, accessories, freight and timing drive the material quote. Provide the delivery location and receiving constraints with the layout so the rep can review the complete order. Pricing is confirmed on a written quote; order size affects freight, which the rep confirms on the quote.
- Material scope Submit the playing-surface line, fringe line, cut schedule and requested accessories together. Identify any unresolved selections.
- Delivery destination State whether the materials are going to the jobsite, a contractor’s yard or another receiving location.
- Access and unloading Describe access restrictions and the planned unloading arrangement. Ask the rep to confirm delivery requirements before scheduling.
- Required timing Provide the requested material date and any staged-delivery needs. Confirm availability and shipment timing before committing the installation schedule.
Review revisions as a complete package. Changing the fringe line can change its available roll width and cut layout. Changing the layout can change quantities and freight planning. Obtain an updated written quote rather than relying on an earlier version.
What should be checked at receiving and for the warranty?
Check the delivered material against the approved order before cutting or installing it. Keep the playing surface and fringe identifiable, and retain shipment records for registration. The factory warranty is prorated and runs 15 years on every turf line. Material must be registered within 30 days of shipment.
- Reconcile the shipment Compare product identification, delivered pieces and accessories with the order documents. Resolve discrepancies before using the affected material.
- Document condition Record visible concerns and contact the trade desk for next steps before cutting or installing affected rolls.
- Keep records together Retain the written quote, order confirmation, shipment documents and published spec sheets with the job file.
- Assign registration Identify who will complete registration and track the deadline from shipment, not from installation completion.
Review the factory warranty for its terms and applicable requirements. Do not describe a prorated materials warranty to the client as an installation warranty. Superior Turf Direct supplies materials only.
Common questions
- Can I order the same turf for the putting surface and fringe?
- Do not assume a single line meets both parts of the design. The playing surface and fringe have different intended roles. Check the published spec sheet for the proposed application, confirm the client’s approved selections, and list each area separately even if the final specification uses the same product.
- Can I reuse leftover landscape turf around the green?
- Evaluate leftover material against the approved fringe specification before assigning it to the job. Confirm product identity, condition, usable dimensions and material direction. Include seam placement and trimming in that review. An offcut that covers the net area may still be unsuitable for the planned layout or client-approved appearance.
- Should I order infill with the turf?
- Confirm the selected line’s requirements before adding infill to the order. Do not transfer the infill selection or application instructions from a landscape product without checking compatibility. Ask the rep to identify the specified material and confirm the quoted quantity against the project area and applicable published instructions.
- Can I quote a green from total area alone?
- Total area can support an initial inquiry, but it is not a complete ordering basis. Provide dimensions, surface boundaries, proposed seams and separate fringe areas. Available roll widths and requested cuts affect the material requirement. Pricing is confirmed on a written quote after the order scope is reviewed.
- Does a phased delivery change the warranty registration deadline?
- Material must be registered within 30 days of shipment. For a phased order, keep the shipment dates and material records identifiable, and confirm the registration process with the trade desk. Do not wait until the entire project is installed to address registration for materials that have already shipped.
